Craig wrote a book called Conversions that looks very interesting. I just listened to him on this podcast, and I think you will find it interesting, as it talks about how families deal with it when a member of the family leaves the family religion (or comes out of the closet), and how they can reconcile. http://mormonstories.org/conversions-two-family-stories-from-the-reformation-and-modern-america-with-craig-harline/

Why in the world would anyone find the FAP materials "too hard"? Is showing compassion for your child too hard? Is expressing love and advocating for your child too hard? Is supporting your child too hard? Is stopping the rejecting behaviors listed in the FAP booklet too hard? Is learning to apply the listed accepting behviors too hard? These are not difficult principles to apply or difficult behaviors to adopt--they are in fact at the heart of the gospel--and are in complete accord with gospel principles and Church teachings. Imagine: loving our LGBT children. Paraphrasing John Lennon: "Imagine:all LDS parents loving their LGBT children; imagine LDS families stopping rejecting behaviors; imagine no more gay suicides. Imagine-- it isn't hard to do."

Wonderfully written, Diane! I remember you wanting a son named Ross before even his sister was born. He's everything that I hope my boys grow up to be, and you are a magnificent example for me even now, thirty years after I splattered paint on the wall of your apartment while making 80's sweatshirts. Thank you for being a pioneer.

Thank you for sharing your story. I am a straight ally, not because I had a gay loved one but because people like you have been sharing their stories! And since I became an ally I now have a family member who is going through what you have been through. I was able to be there for them in the way they needed, again, because people like you were brave and spoke up! Thank you and to everyone else willing to put their stories out there for all of us to stretch and grow in true empathy.
